Practice Overview

At the Kansas CIty criminal defense law firm of David E. Pettyjohn, Attorney at Law, I apply my over 25 years as a solo practitioner to provide outstanding criminal legal advice and unparalleled representation to clients in matters of Criminal Defense, Personal Bankruptcy, and Mechanic's Liens.

From my law office located in Kansas City, MO, I represent clients throughout Northwest and Western Missouri, including in Kansas City, Independence, St. Joseph, Richmond, and Harrisonville in the counties of Cass, Platte, Clay, Jackson, Lafayette, Ray and Buchanan.

Criminal Defense

Since 1979, I have been defending the rights of those accused of criminal offenses and I have built a solid reputation with judges, prosecuting attorneys, and others in the criminal court system.  As a former prosecutor, I am intimately familiar with the best criminal defense strategies based on the particular circumstances of your arrest and criminal charges.  I defend against all felony and misdemeanor charges including DUI/DWI and other drunk driving charges, serious traffic violations, parole and probation violations, drug violations such as possession, sales and distribution, sex offenses, homicide and all other criminal matters.  I have had particular success defending those accused of drug possession-related charges, and always remind my clients that they do not have to consent to a search.

The money spent obtaining a bond from a bail bondsman is lost – forever.  With my assistance, I can help you obtain a 10% cash bond, saving you a great deal of expense.

Personal Bankruptcy

Chapter 7 consumer or individual bankruptcy is a process by which most of your debts are discharged through the liquidation of assets.  I skilled in all aspects of bankruptcy law and pre-bankruptcy planning, including services that may prevent foreclosure on your home by reorganizing your assets.  I can provide a thorough assessment of your total property and assets to determine what can be saved from liquidation, and what cannot.  I can also represent you in appealing your bankruptcy decision.  Chapter 13 bankruptcy is an alternative that generally allows you to keep more of your assets while you are given more time to pay off your debts from your own future earned income.  Bankruptcy is a serious decision that can permanently affect your financial future. As a Kansas City Chapter 13 and Chapter 7 bankruptcy lawyer, I can advise you thoroughly on both options and help you reach the decision that best suits your situation.

I am unique among other Kansas City bankruptcy attorneys in that I have extensive experience working on behalf of both debtors and creditors.  I thoroughly understand the process from both sides, and use this knowledge to eliminate as many potential bankruptcy pitfalls as possible.  When you retain my attorney services, you can trust that the bankruptcy process will be go as smoothly as is possible for you and your family.

Mechanic's Liens

A mechanic's lien is filed on behalf of a contractor who has performed improvements on a property and has not been paid in full. The lien may be obtained against a property owner for the value of any authorized construction, materials and labor used to repair or improve any structure on their property.  I help Kansas City contractors and suppliers alike obtain money rightfully due to them by filing mechanic’s liens.  In addition, I can assist property owners and others in mechanic’s lien defense matters.
